Archive for the ‘Restaurant of the Week’ Category

It has been a long time since I have been wanting to recommend a restaurant. The reason being is consistency. It must be the toughest challenge restaurants face because many can’t seem to accomplish it. So why this restaurant and why now? Easy, let me count the ways:
1. The owners (Tom & George) are the nicest people you could ever meet. They greet you at the door in order for you to feel welcomed and appreciated for coming to their establishment. They were born in Greece and have that beautiful European flair!
2. The wait staff are kind, patient (my girl friend has a laundry list of how she wants her drinks, etc.), and they desire that you have a wonderful experience at their restaurant. Frank (one of the waiters) has been with them forever, but you can’t tell because he treats the guest as if it were his first day on the job. His happiness is contagious!
3. The Food is delicious! My biggest struggle is what to eat, because all of the dishes are prepared so well! Be forewarned, their Cioppino will make you feel as though you are in Genoa, Italy (its origin). It is that good! It will make you want to save up your money to go there.
4. The price is much lower than what I would charge if it were my restaurant. I think they could charge more, but they want people to return often.
5. Their outdoor patio is beautiful. It will make you feel as though you are on vacation.

Take my advice, quit going to restaurants that don’t care whether you go back or not. Spend your time and money wisely. Visit Citron Bistro! I am glad I did!

My family and I usually pick a destination for our vacation.  There are four of us in this decision making process so it takes a few heated discussions to select our destination.  This was not the case this year.

For the past two years my eight year old daughter has been recording every television show that has anything to do with desserts.  Her two favorite shows are Food Network’s  “Challenge” and “Cup Cake Wars”.  My husband and I have allowed her to use all of our memory on our DVD because she wants to become a pastry chef when she graduates from High School.  So this year I came up with the idea that we would stay in town and visit at least one, if not two, dessert shops a day.  Boy was it the vacation to remember!

We started our trip at “d Bar Desserts”.  I called the day we were to visit “d Bar Desserts” and spoke to Lisa (one of the owners and pastry chef’s of d Bar Desserts).  I explained to her that we were spending our summer vacation traveling to the best dessert spots in town in order to show our daughter what it would mean for her to be a pastry chef.  Lisa could not have been any kinder.  She set up a time for my family and I to visit with her and her husband, Keegan (Judge on the “Challenge”) at d Bar Desserts.

When we arrived Lisa and Keegan greeted us at the door.  Keegan spoke to our daughter about their business, what they do on a daily basis, and how they started in the business.  Keegan and Lisa spent more time with us then what we ever anticipated.  We had dinner and dessert.  The kindness they showed, the food that we were served, and the memories they created for my family (especially our daughter) was priceless!

“Life is not a dress rehearsal, so create one exquisite moment a day.”  d Bar Desserts will be the place that will help you create that one “Exquisite moment”!

They are located at:

1475 E 17th Ave

Denver, CO 80218

Really, what the title should read is “Frosting out of this World”!

Nothing beats homemade frosting, that is unless you are eating the frosting off of a cupcake from “Happy Cakes Bakeshop”.  A few years ago I was introduced to “Happy Cakes” by my photographer.  When I was in her studio she told me how she and her girlfriends drive several minutes to attend “Happy Hour” at “Happy Cakes”.  “Happy Hour” consists of eating just the frosting.  I thought it was crazy, but I love good bakeries.  So I drove from the Denver Tech Center to the Highlands just to purchase a cupcake.

You are probably asking “What is so special about the frosting?’  The frosting is probably better than any frosting I have ever eaten.  Sad to say, even better than my mom’s.  That means it is outrageously delicious!  It melts in your mouth.  It is not too sweet.  It has great texture and it is made from scratch.  Unfortunately, I am not doing it justice with my description of how it tastes because it is much better.

The next time you need a unique gift for someone special then think of “Happy Cakes Bakeshop”.  The person will be very surprised and pleased.  A word of warning, make sure you go early in the day or place an order for your cupcakes because this is a well sought after business.

Happy Cakes Bakeshop is located at 3815 W. 32nd Ave, Denver, Colorado 80211.  The phone number is 303.477.3556.  The web page is www.happycakesdenver.com The bakeshop is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Just as a reminder – Mother’s Day is next weekend.

Il Posto

When I hear the words “Italian Food”, I immediately think of Il Posto at 2011 E 17th Ave, Denver (17th and Race).  It is hard to find amazing Italian food.  I lived in Italy while I was a teenager and have traveled back several times to visit friends.  I use to think that there were no Denver restaurants that serve authentic Italian food, that was until I ate at Il Posto.  If you want a restaurant where you are greeted by the Owner, Andrea, and are treated like you are his only guest, then this is the place to have lunch (Monday – Friday) or dinner.  The menu changes daily so I won’t even tell you what to order until it comes to dessert.  I love his dessert called Bombolini!  It looks like small round donuts. Yum!  I can not describe them other then they alone, are worth the trip!  If you have an opportunity to visit the restaurant, let me know what you think of Andrea’s food.  I would strongly recommend using Opentables.com in order to get a table without waiting on a Friday or Saturday night.
